Zagreb with kids

Croatia's quiet, walkable, tram-first capital

Family Score · 76/100 for Zagreb

Why Zagreb works for families

Zagreb is Croatia's capital that nobody visits — because everyone's rushing south to Dubrovnik or Hvar. That makes it the family trip that genuinely surprises: a compact Austro-Hungarian old town on the hill (Gornji Grad), a flat lower town (Donji Grad) threaded with trams and parks, museums you've never heard of that turn out brilliant (Museum of Broken Relationships, Museum of Illusions), and prices half of what you'd pay in Vienna.

It rains more than you'd expect — summer thunderstorms are real — but the city handles weather with proper café culture and a funicular (shortest in the world, 66m) connecting the two halves of town. Plan 2 days here as a bookend to a Croatia road trip, or 4 days as a slow-city escape on its own.

By your kids' ages

Zagreb changes shape depending on how old your kids are.

with toddlers (ages 1–3)

Lower-town Zagreb is pram-friendly flat. Funicular is a 60-second thrill. Zoo + park at Maksimir is a full afternoon.

Must-do
  • ✅ Funicular (free with transit pass; 60-second ride, kids love it)
  • ✅ Maksimir park + zoo (one of Europe's oldest and still charming)
  • ✅ Dolac market morning (fruit tasting at kids' height)
  • ✅ Noon cannon at Lotrščak Tower (loud — bring earmuffs)
Skip
  • ⏭️ Museum of Broken Relationships — adult theme

with primary-school kids (ages 5–9)

Must-do

  • ✅ Technical Museum (planetarium + mining tour + Tesla room)
  • ✅ Funicular + Upper Town walk
  • ✅ Plitvice Lakes day trip

  • ✅ Street-art walk in Tkalčićeva + Branimirova
  • ✅ Plitvice Lakes day trip

Where to stay in Zagreb with kids

📍 Donji Grad (Lower Town)

Flat, pram-friendly, close to trains + trams + museums. Best for first visits.

📍 Gornji Grad (Upper Town)

Cobbled, atmospheric, old-town views. Pretty but hills with pram = workout.

📍 Maksimir

Near the enormous Maksimir park + zoo, residential, tram to centre in 15 min. Best for a longer stay.

Budget — family of 4

Budget

€500–700 for a family of 4 across 3 nights (aparthotel, Dolac market + bakery lunches, free walks, tram passes).

Mid

€900–1,200 for 3 nights (3-star central hotel, Plitvice day trip, museum admissions, 2 restaurant dinners).

Comfort

€1,800+ for 3 nights (4-star central, private Plitvice tour, Michelin-ish Noel dinner).

Saving tips:
  • 💡 ZET family day ticket (€10) covers 2 adults + 3 kids on all trams + funicular + buses
  • 💡 Dolac market lunch (sausage + bread + fruit) is €8 for a family of 4
  • 💡 Many museums under 7 free, 7–18 half price — always ask
  • 💡 Plitvice day trip via public bus (€15 return) vs €70 organised tour

Best time to go

When: Apr–Jun + Sep–Oct (perfect), Dec (famous Christmas market, voted Europe's best 3 years in a row), avoid Jul–Aug (hot, locals flee to the coast)

Getting there: Zagreb Airport (ZAG) → centre by Pleso shuttle bus in 30 min, €7 adult. Direct from most European hubs (1.5–2.5h); good connections for Dalmatia via internal flights.
