Prague with toddlers

Prague with a toddler is a park + tram trip with a quick castle photo. The old town cobbles are hard on strollers; a baby carrier works much better.

Family Score · 85/100 for Prague

Why Prague works for families

Prague looks like it was designed by someone drawing a storybook. The castle on the hill, the astronomical clock, the river, the trams, the gothic bridges — every street corner feels like it belongs in a children’s book. Kids 5+ absolutely feel this. And on top of that, it’s one of the cheapest European capitals: hotels at mid-range Western prices get you 4-star rooms here, meals at proper restaurants cost half what they would in Paris.

The tradeoff is cobbles. The old town is beautiful and brutal on strollers. If you’re coming with a baby or small toddler, a baby carrier is a must; if with a 3-year-old, prepare for slow walks. Trams solve the hilliest parts (Prague Castle climb especially). Weather is reliably moody — bring layers.

By your kids' ages

Prague changes shape depending on how old your kids are.

with toddlers (ages 1–3)

Prague with a toddler is a park + tram trip with a quick castle photo. The old town cobbles are hard on strollers; a baby carrier works much better.

Must-do
  • ✅ Letná Park (brilliant playground + view of city)
  • ✅ Vltava riverboat (short loop)
  • ✅ Petrín funicular ride
  • ✅ A proper trdelník (sweet pastry) stop
Skip
  • ⏭️ Prague Castle on foot
  • ⏭️ Jewish Quarter walking tour

with primary-school kids (ages 5–9)

This is Prague’s sweet spot. The city is literally a fairy-tale, the castle has knights and towers, and the Toy Museum is a sleeper hit. Add puppet shows (Prague has a long puppetry tradition) and you have a 5-day trip they’ll remember forever.

Must-do
  • ✅ Prague Castle + Toy Museum
  • ✅ Petrín Hill mirror maze + observation tower climb
  • ✅ Astronomical Clock show (every hour)
  • ✅ A puppet show at the National Marionette Theatre
Skip
  • ⏭️ Mucha Museum unless kids are already art-curious

with teenagers (ages 13+)

Teens take to Prague because it’s photogenic + cheap + atmospheric. Street-food tours, a Vltava boat party (older teens), a trdelník crawl, and the Kafka Museum are the right fit.

Must-do
  • ✅ Guided street-food tour
  • ✅ Vltava boat cruise
  • ✅ John Lennon Wall + Kampa modern art
  • ✅ Kafka Museum
Skip
  • ⏭️ Toy Museum — too young

Where to stay in Prague with kids

📍 Old Town (Staré Město)

Walking distance to everything iconic. Busy by day, atmospheric by night. Cobbles everywhere.

📍 Malá Strana (Lesser Town)

Below the castle. Quieter than Old Town, close to the river, more charming. Still cobbled.

📍 Vinohrady

Residential, parks, cafes, 10 min by tram to Old Town. Much cheaper and easier with kids than central.

Budget — family of 4

Budget

€500–1,900. For a family of 4 across 3 nights: budget €500–700 (hostel-hotel, pub meals, trams, free walking tours)

Mid

€900–1,200 for a family of 4 across 3 nights (3-star central hotel, Prague Castle ticket, 2 restaurant dinners, river boat)

Comfort

€1,800+ for a family of 4 across 3 nights (4-star Malá Strana hotel, private castle guide, fine dining)

Saving tips:

  • 💡 Public transport day pass is €4 — cheaper than almost anywhere in Europe
  • 💡 Trdelník is €3 at any street stand
  • 💡 Many museums are free the first Monday of the month — crowded but worth timing

Best time to go

When: April–June, September (ideal; mild, uncrowded). December (Christmas markets, cold but magical).

Getting there: Prague Airport (PRG) is 30 min by bus + metro to central. Direct from most European hubs (1–3h). Taxi flat rate is ~€25.
