The Côte d'Azur base — old town, beach, Monaco and Èze in under an hour
84Family Score · 84/100 for Nice
Why Nice works for families
Nice is the only major French Mediterranean city with an airport, a beach, an old town, and direct trains to a dozen postcard villages — Monaco in 20 minutes, Villefranche in 10, Antibes in 25, Èze in 15. Rent a hotel on the Promenade des Anglais, buy a Zou coastal train pass, and the whole French Riviera becomes a half-hour daytrip menu.
The caveat is the beach — Nice's famous beaches are made of smooth river pebbles the size of walnuts, not sand. Kids under 5 will not love it; aqua shoes are essential; and the stones get hot. The nearby Villefranche + Antibes beaches have sand. But the city compensates: Vieux Nice (the old town) is one of the Mediterranean's best for a family wander — socca (chickpea pancake) stalls, flower markets, gelato on every corner, pastel pink and ochre everywhere.

Nice in 3 days: beach, old town, Monaco.

Nice changes shape depending on how old your kids are.
with toddlers (ages 1–3)
Nice with a toddler needs some planning — pebble beaches are not toddler-friendly (bring aqua shoes), the Promenade is great for buggies, and Villefranche's sand beach 10 min by train is where you spend afternoons. Jardin Albert Ier has a carousel and playground.
Must-do
✅ Villefranche-sur-Mer sand beach (train 10 min)
✅ Promenade des Anglais buggy walk
✅ Jardin Albert Ier carousel + playground
✅ Cours Saleya flower market (shaded, pretty, calm in morning)
This is Nice's sweet spot. Monaco's Oceanographic Museum is one of the great kid museums in Europe. Antibes has sand + a pirate boat. Èze is a storybook village. The train network makes the whole coast feel like a theme park.
Must-do
✅ Monaco Oceanographic Museum (full morning)
✅ Antibes sand beach + Picasso Museum
✅ Èze medieval village + exotic garden
✅ Grasse perfume-making workshop

⏭️ Fine-dining focus — stick to pizza by the slice and gelato
Teens take to Nice because the Riviera glamour is still there — Monte Carlo casino photos, Cap Ferrat yacht-watching, Cannes film festival streets, hiking the coastal paths. The old town is for selfies; the villages are for day trips.
Must-do
✅ Monaco + Monte Carlo casino square
✅ Coastal hike Cap Ferrat (sentier du littoral, 7km)
Walking distance to beach and Vieux Nice, elegant Belle Époque hotels. Busier but iconic.
📍 Vieux Nice (Old Town)
Atmospheric, cafe-dense, flower market on Cours Saleya at your door. Narrow lanes — stroller-tricky but magical.
📍 Mont Boron / Cimiez
Residential, elevated, views over the bay, quieter with young kids. Tram to centre in 15 min.
Budget — family of 4
Budget
€900–1,300 for a family of 4 across 3 nights (budget hotel in old town edge, pizza + socca meals, Lignes d'Azur transit, free beaches).
Mid
€1,500–2,100 for 3 nights (3-star Carré d'Or hotel, Monaco + Antibes + Èze day trips, 2 restaurant dinners).
Comfort
€3,500+ for 3 nights (4-star Promenade hotel, private driver days, Monaco Palace tour, fine-dining with sea view).
Saving tips:
💡 SNCF Zou Côte d'Azur regional day pass (€10 adult, €5 kids) covers unlimited coastal trains Nice ↔ Cannes ↔ Monaco ↔ Menton — a single ticket to Monaco alone is €4
💡 Socca (chickpea pancake, €3 slice) + pissaladière at Chez Pipo in Vieux Nice is the local family lunch
💡 Free public beaches are between every private beach club — bring a mat
💡 Monaco Oceanographic Museum family ticket is €55 vs. €90 individual — always ask
Best time to go
When: May–June and September (ideal; 22–26°C, warm sea, uncrowded). Avoid August if you can — crowded, expensive, hot.
Getting there: Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) is 20 min by tram line 2 (€1.50 single, kids under 10 free) to the city centre. Direct from most European hubs (1–3h). The airport is on the beach — one of the most scenic landings in Europe.
