Bruges with kids

The canal city built to pram-sized dimensions

Family Score · 81/100 for Bruges

Why Bruges works for families

Bruges is the European city that works for every age at once. Toddlers like the swans. Primary-school kids like the belfry climb and the chocolate factories. Teens like the Groeningemuseum and the fries culture. Adults like that the entire old town is a UNESCO site you can walk end-to-end in 20 minutes with a stroller.

It gets crowded — day-trippers from Brussels and cruise ships from Zeebrugge arrive 10am–4pm. The trick is a 2-night minimum stay: evenings and early mornings, Bruges is yours. Stay inside the ring canal, skip the day-tripper restaurants on Markt, and the trip feels like a storybook.

Where to stay in Bruges with kids

📍 Inside the ring canal (centre)

Walk everywhere, zero traffic noise after 7pm. Pick a side street near Jan van Eyckplein.

📍 Near 't Zand (west centre)

Quieter, close to station, slightly cheaper. 10-min walk to Markt.

📍 Sint-Anna (east centre)

Residential, canals, windmill walks. Best for a 5-day family stay.

Budget — family of 4

Budget

€900–1,200 for a family of 4 across 3 nights (B&B, fries + waffle lunches, free walks, canal boat).

Mid

€1,500–2,000 for 3 nights (3-star central hotel, chocolate workshop, belfry + museums, 2 restaurant dinners).

Comfort

€2,800+ for 3 nights (4-star canal-side, private walking tour, Michelin lunch).

Saving tips:
  • 💡 Train from Brussels is €12 adult / €6 kid — a Eurostar family combo often works out cheap
  • 💡 Fries at Chez Vincent are €3 — the national lunch
  • 💡 Belgian waffles street-side are €2 vs €6 in cafés
  • 💡 The Groeningemuseum under-12 is free (so are many Bruges museums)

Best time to go

When: Apr–Jun + Sep–Oct (perfect, lightest crowds), Dec (Christmas market), avoid Jul–Aug peak

Getting there: Fly to Brussels (BRU) or Charleroi (CRL); train to Bruges in 1h direct. The Thalys/Eurostar via Brussels is a European family favourite from London/Paris.
