Athens with a toddler is a park + beach trip with a quick Acropolis photo. The ancient sites are not toddler-friendly — heat, uneven stones, no shade.
76Family Score · 76/100 for Athens
Why Athens works for families
Athens is a trip that lands harder when kids are old enough to know what the Acropolis is. For younger kids, it’s a hot, hilly, crowded city with one spectacular hill climb and a lot of taverna dinners. For kids 7+, it’s a chance to see something they’ve learned about at school — and that connection, when it clicks, is worth the trip.
Time of year matters enormously. July–August in Athens with kids is genuinely tough: 38°C+ regularly, no shade on the Acropolis, exhausted parents. Spring and autumn turn the city into one of the easiest European family trips. The sea is 30 min away; the Athens Riviera (Vouliagmeni, Varkiza) is as good as anywhere in Europe for a half-day beach break.

with toddlers (ages 1–3)
Athens with a toddler is a park + beach trip with a quick Acropolis photo. The ancient sites are not toddler-friendly — heat, uneven stones, no shade.
Must-do
✅ National Garden playground
✅ Varkiza or Astir Beach half-day
✅ Monastiraki stroller walk (flat, pedestrian)
✅ Loukoumades (Greek doughnuts) at Krinos
Skip
⏭️ Full Acropolis climb
⏭️ Delphi day trip — too long in a car
with primary-school kids (ages 5–9)
This is where Athens unlocks. The Acropolis Museum’s kids’ audio guide is excellent, and the Parthenon lands as the thing they’ve seen in textbooks.
Must-do
✅ Acropolis morning + Acropolis Museum
✅ Panathenaic Stadium (they can run a lap)
✅ Beach afternoon at Vouliagmeni
✅ Hellenic Children’s Museum in Plaka
Skip
⏭️ Delphi for kids under 7 — car journey too long
with teenagers (ages 13+)
Teens appreciate Athens as the start of a trip — a day here, then an island hop. Street-food tours, graffiti walks in Exarcheia, and an evening at a rooftop bar with the Parthenon lit up are the highlights.
Must-do
✅ Guided street-food tour in Monastiraki
✅ Exarcheia street-art walk
✅ Rooftop sunset dinner with Acropolis view
✅ Day trip to Hydra or ferry onwards to the islands

⏭️ Hellenic Children’s Museum — too young
Where to stay in Athens with kids
📍 Plaka / Monastiraki
Walking distance to the Acropolis, atmospheric but busy. Great tavernas, lots of pedestrian streets, kid-friendly.
📍 Koukaki
Residential, trendy, 10 min walk to Acropolis. Quieter than Plaka with excellent cafes.
📍 Glyfada (Athens Riviera)
If the trip is beach-first and sightseeing-second, basing in Glyfada and daytripping to the Acropolis is a cleaner family setup.
Budget — family of 4
Budget
€700–1,000 for a family of 4 across 3 nights (budget hotel in Koukaki, tavernas, Metro passes, Acropolis combined ticket)
Mid
€1,100–1,500 for a family of 4 across 3 nights (3-star Plaka hotel, Acropolis + Agora combined pass, 2 proper dinners, taxi to beach)
Comfort
€2,200+ for a family of 4 across 3 nights (4-star hotel with Acropolis view, private guide, driver days)
Saving tips:
💡 Combined Acropolis ticket (€30) covers 7 sites — pays off at 2+
💡 Souvlaki + gyros are €3–4 — the cheapest sit-down family meal in Europe
💡 Metro is €1.20/ride and runs to the airport (€9) — cheaper than taxi
💡 Many museums offer free entry on specific days (first Sunday Nov–Mar, International Museum Day) — crowded but free
Best time to go
When: April–May, September–mid October (ideal). Avoid July–August if possible.
Getting there: Athens Airport (ATH) is 40 min by Metro to central. Direct from most European hubs (2–4h). Taxi flat rate from airport is €40 day/€55 night and often faster than Metro with kids.
